2022 has been a pretty abysmal year for English rugby, from premiership teams collapsing due to financial pressures and a complete lack of international success.
Following the sacking of England’s head coach Eddie Jones, many rugby critics have been fast to slate the decision choices on the field, as well as the nonchalant attitude towards the press.
So lets look back at the top 7 England players who had the most minutes on the pitch, and the impact that they had:
No.7: Kyle Sinckler – 239 minutes
The 29-year-old London born prop has been a pivotal, yet hot-headed member of the England Team. He has become a regular player in his Bristol Bears side as well as proving himself as a solid member of the front row.
No.6: Jonny Hill – 285 minutes
The Sale Sharks second-rower has become made a name for himself in recent years following excellent seasons at Exeter. This season, he has made minimal appearances for his new club Sale however after a great performance under Eddie Jones, he will likely get off the bench in the new year, if only he can keep his cool!
No. 5: Marcus Smith – 300 minutes
The Philippines born fly-half has burst onto the scene with a formidable premiership winning season at Harlequins. Being only 23, he is able to successfully dictate the field and orchestrate a variety of self-made and intricate team tries. New-found king of the goose-step!
No.4: Tom Curry – 308 minutes
Despite England recently producing a vast number of quality back-row players, Tom Curry had firmly secured himself a slot in the England team. His physicality at Sale Sharks was only made more evident in the England team, through his scrummaging, tackles and his signature jackalling moves at the breakdown.
No. 3: Owen Farrell – 320 minutes
Owen Farrell has been a star for a number of years now and can easily play as a fly-half or a centre. Bringing his Saracens team back from relegation within a year, to topping the table the next, proves he owns the number 10 jersey. With his dad also being a former England international, it was no surprise that he would have the talent to succeed his dad in his skill level and collectiveness with ball in hand.
No. 2: Maro Itoje – 320 minutes
The London born lock is without doubt one of the most menacing players in the England squad. Having captained the England under 20’s squad to victory in the World Championship, before making his debut in 2016, he has solidified himself as a regular in the squad. Being 1.9 meters tall weighing 115 kg, and with an unbelievable 81% tackle success rate, he rightfully deserves his 62 caps.
No.1: Max Malins – 404 minutes
Saracens full-back Max Malins has only had 14 appearances and has a total of 404 minutes on the pitch for England. The 26-year-old can easily be described as a utility back, being able to fit into almost any position in the back 7, being able to dictate play, as well bas being very successful under the high ball.
With the appointment of ex-Leicester Tigers and premiership winning head coach Steve Borthwick, England's chances of world cup success in France 2023 seems a long way away, but with many internationals until then, England fans must keep on dreaming!
